I also agree with everything you have said. I have had great difficulty getting my wife to go back to Bali as she hates the continual harassment by time share sellers, drug dealers etc. She also hates the well prepared stories of how hard up they are and how they really need tips or grants from tourists to survive. She does work in the disability industry so she is attuned to people that genuinely need help.
We are going back next April so I am hoping all goes well.
Ps here is one Australian tourist that does behave himself in Bali.
