At no time anywhere on the island did I feel unsafe due to anything other than from losing my wallet to a pick pocket, being drugged and robbed, my wife having her bag snatched etc. and that was only in the Kuta area. I guess these are perceived fears bred from reading reports on this forum. I also found hawkers etc. there to be just too much in my face and too persistent, and always wanting to pretend they remember you from before and trying to get their hand into yours for a shake as if old buddies, and putting their arm around you. I have only ever experienced that in Kuta, and I think it is worse than I remember from 4 years ago.
