The route to Pemuteran is via Gilimanuk, the car ferry port, and along the boundary of the Bali Barat Reserve, an area of unspoilt land and vegetation. We asked Argus to take us into Gilimanook for a look and to take the obvious photos of the very visible Java across the Bali Straight. I don't think he understood why.
Onward to Pemuteran, at times passing through the reserve. The people that we see along the way appear to be much poorer than their countrymen in the south if the skin and bone indicator can be trusted. Monkeys play along the roadside in the reserve areas. We pass a local wheeling his bicycle along the road. He would have had about a ¼ of a tonne of fire wood stacked on the rear carrier, stacked so high and so heavy that he was unable to ride. As we continued on I could not spot an obvious destination for him. I wonder if he is still wheeling the bike even now?!
Pemuteran! Argus overshoots the rocky access road to Taman Sari and does a quick u-turn. He is nearing completion of a 200,000 rp drive. He and Kadek look pleased. As he negotiates his Honda sedan slowly and gingerly along the laneway into the hotel I make a mental note to next time organise a car with at least 100mm of road clearance! We are very early into the hotel, the time being 11.00 am and their check out time being mid-day. No problem, say the staff. They are very welcoming and take our luggage into storage and direct us to the restaurant area for a very welcome “welcome” drink. Free drink over, we sit and relax our selves into the view of the beach and the surf breaking onto the mostly white sand. The Taman Sari has a white sand beach in front of it, yet the Pondok Sari and Taman Selini have blach sand……
Before midday we are led to our ocean view cottage and shown through. It is a lovely cottage and we particularly liked the front verandah facing the beach. A great sitting and reading spot, not to mention G&T drinking spot! The room has a king bed, mosquito nets, outside bathroom and toilet (separate entrance to each even though it is one area!) The aircon is humming gently.
Pemuteran is a fantastic spot to lay back and rest……. So we did!
