I always find that it's always good to know the people of the hotels that you like and chances the discount will just appear without prompting.
Secondly, when the hotels starts quoting rack rates, don't stay there. Because:
1.)The hotel have been booked solid and the only rooms are the ones with rising damp, wonky air-cons or the one where the Japanese girl done herself in last summer...
2.)They had their rooms thrashed by some Australians last month. Some friends of mine from an ad company are still banned from several hotels in Bali after a very boozy weekend.
