We, my family of 7, have been going for three weeks every year for the past 7. Dont worry too much about it. The US always has warnings about Indonesia, its a matter of CYA. Our kids were 4,5,10 and 11 when we first started going and my mother is 72 and has Parkinsons. We stand out like sore thumbs and have never felt anything but love. Just because governments dont like each other doesnt mean the peoples of those countries can not and do not look beyond that. GO...have a blast...relax and get around and see the island. Just take the same precautions you would on a trip within the states...crime happens everywhere.
