Among the theories of how the drugs could have been planted is one that it was an attempt by baggage handlers to transport drugs from Brisbane to Sydney, and that the interception in Sydney got bungled. This may never be proven. It makes some logical sense if the price of marijuana in Australia is higher than in Bali. It does seem like a needlessly risky way to transport drugs. I would think driving a trunk full of drugs would be safer. Still, they say there is evidence that this kind of operation has existed for other drug shipments. If I had been born 80 years earlier I probably would have been saying no one would bother to buy liquor from big criminal gangs when I can go to the store and get yeast and grapejuice, and I'd have been wrong about that. Why put a shipment of drugs meant to be picked up in Sydney in a bag checked through to Denpasar? One possibility is that (if this theory is true) the smugglers could have thought a missed interception would attract no local attention if it is "safely" shipped off to Indonesia. That would be balanced against the risk of a Sydney resident discovering the uncollected shipment and reporting it to local police.
