OK here’s my views on the Tunjung.

Yes I really love the Mandira, mainly I think because of the position it is in the all the room outside for the kiddies to play etc. But now I have stayed at Tunjung I could not see myself going back to a boxy hotel room again.

I guess you have got a quote for the three bedder Villa somewhere in the vicinity of US$90-95 per night? If so I think this is a good price for 6 people. Did you also get airport free airport transfers as well? Don’t think you would have food thrown in at that price but if you got it great. I have two menu’s for Tunjung, the breakfast and the lunch and dinner ones, I will email them to you if you like. We did not eat there very much as the menu is rather limited and also has a lot of seafood which our family eats very little of anyway. One trap is not to have your eyes set on something as a few times we were told sorry that dish is not available today. Also if you order the Bruschetta, and you don’t like it spicy, order no chilli. But in saying all that the couple of breckies and lunches we had there were good quality.

I think you need to consider the sleeping arrangements. Upstairs are two really large bedrooms each with it’s own aircon, “keypad” safe, large wardrobe, bed side tables, vanity, TV and small veranda’s (enough room for two chairs each). The Master bedroom has a king size bed, telephone and a really huge bathroom separate bath and shower. This bathroom is “open air”. The second bedroom upstairs has two king size single beds and the bathroom is a bit smaller than the master. This bathroom is closed in.

The third bedroom downstairs is quiet small, compared to the upstairs ones. This room has a double bed (I don’t think it was queen), own aircon, wardrobe and vanity. Two single beds will NOT fit in this room. So this may be your only hiccup with six people. Firstly are two of your sons going to share a double bed? If not, the owner Annie-Rai, has told me that they can put an extra mattress in one of the upstairs rooms to accommodate things. But then if I were in your shoes I would be telling the children where to sleep and not giving them choices. The down stairs bath is also rather small, once again compared to the upstairs ones. The toilet and shower are right next to each other with nothing in between and the hand basin and mirror are actually not in this room but outside of it. This bathroom is fully closed in. I kinda liked this bathroom in as much that when we came home from the beach we just threw the kids in there to get all the sand and salt off them instead of going though the whole place and into the upstairs bathrooms spreading mess as they went. I hate walking on tiled floors when sand and grit is everywhere!!
The open plan area downstairs is huge and just great. No problems with leaving stuff in this area as the security is excellent. And don’t worry about the mozzies they put five or six mozzie coils in and around the place in the evening and they work like a treat. There is a dining room table with six chairs – ideal for breckie in the room if you are having a lazy day. Also when we had a big day out and were a bit tired I use to duck around the corner and grab a menu or two from a few places and have takeaway at the dinning room table, hopefully I will get to my restaurant review this weekend so you can get an idea of where we ate and what was good and not so good. The kitchen is well stocked with a two burner gas stove, kettle, saucepan, frying pan, toaster, sink, plenty of cupboard and drawer space and plenty of crockery, cutlery and glasses. If there are not enough stock they will get it from the restaurant for you. The only small downside was that it only had a bar fridge, but then we stocked up on drinks on a daily basis from the shop across the road. Don’t forget to take your green environmental bags to Bali – say no to plastic. The only other tip for the kitchen is do not leave any food stuffs out at night, or for that matter the garbage bin in the kitchen, because as good as the security is, they can not keep the stray cats out.

The lounge area has two large “day type beds” and a coffee table. This will not be enough for six people at once but are six of you going to be sitting there at one time? The other thing that if the place is not full you can get the reception staff to drag another day bed from the next villa as a loaner – problem solved.

You get a nice breeze through the down stairs section but what I did was I spotted this four foot pedestal fan that was in reception that did not seem it was being used so I asked if we could borrow it no problems it was delivered straight away. We placed it in a corner and this helped when the breeze was down.

There is a third TV downstairs and another phone. There is no DVD player, we bought a cheapie from Australia with us, as we were there for a month it was cheaper than renting one and we gave it to a long time Balinese friend of ours when we were leaving. The DVD was great for the kids and good for “testing” the DVD’s before coming back to Australia.

There is a daily maid service for cleaning, new towels daily and change of sheets every couple of days.

You will need to bring a couple of adaptors for say a DVD player or charging mobile phones or digital camera’s as the power points are those old style two prong ones. You can get them at any duty free store before you go or just duck down to Matahari’s when you arrive as thay have a large stock available. Also you may wish to throw in a small travel clock or two as there are no clocks in the villa, we are a family that does not wear wrist watches – hey our mobile phones have clocks on them anyway. Also web sites state they have a Gym – nope gone.

The swimming pool is not a huge resort style one but at one stage when we were there there were six adults and four children and there was plenty of room to move around. There are only 6 lounge chairs by the pool and very little shade – one umbrella only. The pool area is very hot, when not in the water, as it is has the restaurant on one end, two brick walls on the other two sides and a Villa close to the fourth side. Not much breeze gets in here and no ocean breezes like you get at the Mandira. To us this was no problem as we are beach people more than pool people and mainly used the pool to jump in and cool off after a day of shopping or sight seeing. Yes they have pool towels but none of this rubbish about signing for them in and out. Just take what you need and drop it back in the basket when you have finished with it.

The beach is only a five minute walk away, turn left out of the grounds and then left again, walk through the alleyway next to the Niksoma and you are there. We usually walked a bit further North towards Seminyak as the beach was cleaner and there were a couple of nice restaurants on the beach for a lunchtime snack. Also walking in the opposite direction it only takes about five minutes to get to Padma Street.

Also there are great drivers just out the front RICO and WOLLY – if you want here details let me know.

My overall rating is:

Room 3.5 Stars
Pool 2.5 Stars
Facilities 3.0 Stars
Location 3.5 Stars
Staff 4.0 Stars
Food 3.0 Stars

Overall Rating 3.25 Stars and yes I would stay there again.

Hope this information helps. If you have any other questions please let me know. I will email the pictures tomorrow to all who wants them.
