The recent disaster is only one of the factors which caused a fall in the rupiah. The ending of the government subsidies for petrol and gas, the weak us dollar, the pale export figures, the end of the presidential "honeymoon" have militated against further appreciation of the rupiah. Not to mention the fact that most of the SE Asian countries are considering further devaluation of their currencies following the free fall of the us dollar.
Beside the recurring natural disasters. This is a nation that is trying to get back on its feet and come to terms with its weird political and economic history. But then, they are hardy people and I am sure they will get back on their feet in due course.Just how well, we don't know.
As a frequent visitor, I don't mind the weaker rupiah and it makes my trips there more affordable. So, if you want to help to help them out, give them more business but, be mindful of the security concerns.
