US Citizen:

What you get at the border is not a visa, but a visa exempt entry into Thailand. You can get these for maximum 90 days per every 180 days or 1/2 year (I am not sure which of the 2). After that you will have to get a visa, obtainable at a consulate/embassy outside of Thailand.

I don't know the rules for Chinese citizens.
