Hi Laura,
IMHO Chaweng beach, particularly the southern end, is a superior beach. Lamai is a bit more laid back than Chaweng, but I found the middle aged man-young Thai girl thing to be far more prevalent and open in Lamai. To each his own, but I thought the scene was a little less tasteful than what I prefer and being a smaller beach, it was harder to get away from than in Chaweng.
