If you're looking for cheap fares, perhaps it would be worth considering Melb-Singapore (Tiger Airways???) and then on to Bangkok - think Tiger do that route and if so, would be at a good price.
Only problem is you might have a long time in transit, but then Changi airport is one of the best airports to be stuck in
