I live in the North and have for the past six years. There is very little open political activity up here at the moment, people seem to be busy preparing fields for the wet season and cleaning up for Songkran.
Even the big cities like Chiang Mai seem quiet, but I'm making a run up to the Burmese border today and will keep an eye open for any out of the ordinary military activity.
