I have been a member for many years and never had a problem, although I use the card mainly in Australia and just a few times in New Zealand. Appears to me that the problem lies in Vietnam. Have always been able to use my free nights, once only had to take second choice hotel, no big deal.

Always take advantage of the cheaper rates by booking through the Accor Advantage Plus website, this is even cheaper than if you book through the A Club.
