If I could just add that I find travelling only with onboard luggage the best way to travel. Take clothes that don't wrinkle, roll them instead of folding. New fabrics with wicking qualities allow you to wear long sleeves and long pants, even in summer, and not overheat. You will also be respectable to the locals. Alternatively, always carry a sarong with you - you can cover your head or make a long length skirt when entering temples, use it as a towel on the beach or picnic blanket.
